Semi and National Guard trucks collide

On Behalf of | Jun 25, 2019 | Truck Accidents |

Any automotive accident that South Dakota residents are in is unfortunate and can result in both personal injuries and damages to property, including to the vehicles involved in the accident. Truck accidents, due to the sheer size, weight, and power of the vehicles involved, can be devastating to people and property.

That was the case recently in South Dakota when a semitruck that was carrying a volatile load of liquid carbon dioxide was in a calamitous crash with a National Guard vehicle. The crash happened north of Mitchell, at the intersection of National Guard Road and Highway 57 around 7:30 a.m. on June 19. Authorities, including the South Dakota Highway Patrol, arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.

The National Guard truck involved in the accident was part of a convoy of Illinois National Guard vehicles leaving their armory. As the National Guard truck got on the highway, it went straight into the path of the semi, which had the right of way. The truck and the semi collided, and both went into a ditch and then rolled over, though the semi’s cab stayed upright.

Charges are pending against the young woman, 27, who was driving the National Guard truck. She and her passenger, 26, and the driver of the semi, 64, were all injured. They were taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries. All of their injuries were classified as serious and non-life-threatening. The semi, which had been traveling from Scotland, South Dakota, was carefully examined, and no breach was found.

Of course, accidents like this have legal repercussions. In addition to charges filed against the person deemed to be at fault, those injured can sue for compensation for injuries and damage to vehicles as well as pain and suffering.
