Semitruck hits car head-on

The middle of summer sees cars and trucks going to many different destinations on South Dakota roads. Most of them, one hopes, pay attention to all of the things that can keep themselves and others safe on the roads, like adhering to speed limits and watching where they're going, However, some drivers are not careful, and car accidents and truck accidents result.

A truck accident occurred on U.S. Highway 83 at about 7:00 p.m. one recent evening. A semitruck driver, who was driving northbound close to Herreid, tried to pass another vehicle. When he did, he collided head-on with a Buick LaCrosse, which was in the southbound lane at the time.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Buick, 82, was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered life-threatening injuries when his vehicle was struck by the semi. He was taken to hospital to be given medical care, but died from the injuries. The driver of the semi, who had been wearing a seatbelt, was not injured. He is expected to face charges, though authorities have not made a statement about what those will be.

For over three hours, the section of the highway closest to the scene of the accident was closed to traffic so that authorities could deal with the aftermath of the accident while keeping other people safe. Like with any accident this serious, the South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.

Truck accidents can result in calamity. For that reason, drivers should never take anything for granted, and should monitor everything around them. Failure to do so can result in personal injuries and even deaths.
