How to safely share the road with motorcycles

On Behalf of | Jul 20, 2022 | Motorcycle Accidents, Personal Injury |

During the summer months, it is common to see plenty of motorcycles on the road.

Every driver on the road has a responsibility to drive safely and avoid collisions. Keep these tips in mind for how to safely share the road with motorcycles.

Always check your blind spots

Motorcycles are smaller than other typical vehicles you encounter on the road. They are not as wide and do not take up as much space. They can also maneuver and change lanes much quicker than larger vehicles. A common reason for motorcycle collisions is a driver not seeing the motorcycle. Learn where your blind spots are and make it a habit to turn your head to check for motorcycles after checking your mirrors.

Give extra room

Whether you are trailing behind a motorcycle or looking to pass one, allow extra room between yourself and the bike. If you follow too closely and the motorcycle stops suddenly, the extra space gives you more time to avoid rear-ending the bike. If you are passing a motorcycle, make sure they are fully visible in your rearview mirror before shifting to the lane in front of them.

Use extra caution in bad weather

Motorcyclists may experience decreased visibility in rainy or inclement weather. High winds may create an extra struggle for them to keep control of their bike. When driving near a motorcycle in bad weather, be patient and give them a little extra time and space to navigate.

Catastrophic, costly, painful injuries are common in motorcycle crashes as they have less protection than those traveling inside larger, heavier vehicles. Make an effort to safely share the road with motorcycles to reduce the risk of injury.
